6 Reasons for Smoke Detectors False Alarms and How to Stop False Smoke Alarms
2022-06-17
People may wonder, why does the smoke detector give out false alarms even when there is no fire? In our daily life, some situations might cause a false alarm: 1. Smoke from the cooking, 2. Too much dust in the smoke detector or the detector is used too long 3. The battery is running out 4. Steam or humidity 5. Smoke from cigarettes 6. Poor power connection. How do we solve these problems when they occur?
1.Smoke from the cooking causes Smoke Detectors False Alarms
Many false alarms caused by the smoke from the cookin are triggered by the ion sensor. This kind of detector is quite alert to small smoke particles, so when the smoke from a cooking is spreading, this smoke detector is likely to recognize them and sense them as the smoke from the fire.
There are two solutions for this:
1.One is to move the smoke detector away from the kitchen or other places that might have smoke from the cooking. The farther the smoke detector is, the less likely that it will detect the smoke from a cooking. Make sure to figure out where the air is going when installing a smoke detector.
2.The other is to replace the smoke detector with a new one that is less alert. There are three choices:
3.Buy a new smoke detector with a mute button. Once the smoke detector is triggered, just press the mute button, and it will stop the detector from alarming for 15 minutes, which is enough for the cooking to spread out.
4.Buy a photo-electric smoke detector. This kind of detector is less alert to small smoke particles, so there will be no false alarms when there is smoke from a cooking .
5.Buy a smoke detector that has two sensors, the ion sensor, and the photo-electric sensor. Not only does the smoke detector combine the advantages of two sensors, but it won't be too alert to the small smoke particles. Therefore, the false alarm will not be occurring.

2.Too much dust in the detector or the detector is used too long
If the detector gives a false alarm or keeps beeping, it probably has too much dust, or it has been in use for too long. For cleaning the dust, you can use a vacuum cleaner and put it close to the small openings of the detector to suck out the dust. And for the long-time use of the smoke detector, you should probably replace it with a new one. Keep in mind that the home-use detectors should be replaced after ten years.
3.The battery is running out causes Smoke Detectors False Alarms
Sometimes, the smoke detector will beep when its battery is about to run out, and people will think they hear a false alarm. Actually, this kind of sound is different from the actual alarm, it is quicker and shorter, and it will occur every minute to remind people to replace the battery. If you hear this kind of sound from your smoke detector, you should check if it is still battery-full.
4.Steam or humidity
When the steam or humidity has gathered too much on the sensor or the circuit board, the smoke detector will misjudge the situation and give a false alarm. To solve this problem, you can install a smoke detector far away from the steam or humidity. However, if the smoke detector was working well before, but it reacts to the steam or humidity now, then it probably is getting old. Older smoke detectors will be more alert to the steam and humidity. You can solve the problem by replacing it with a new one.
5.Smoke from cigarettes
Generally, the smoke detectors will not react to cigarette smoke. But in a place where the cigarette smoke is too heavy, such as a place that has many smokers at the same time, then the smoke detector might sense the smoke and give a false alarm.
6.Poor power connection
If the power connection of the smoke detector is poor, then it might give a false alarm. The reason why the smoke detector has a poor power connection is that it is probably too old to work. If the smoke detector has this problem, usually there is no practical way to fix it. This is a warning for you to replace the old smoke detector.
ASENWARE has different types of smoke detectors that meet various needs and are suitable for different places.
